About Stow
Stow on the Wold, meaning meeting place on the hill, is a fine example
of a small English Market Town. Located in the Northeast Cotswolds and
stands beside the Roman Fosse Way. Surrounded by spectacular countryside,
both driving and walking are a joy. It is approximately 800 feet above sea
level. A settlement has existed here since the Iron Age.
The old Stocks on
the green, the latest in a long line, date back to the 15 th century.
The Wells in Well Lane supplied the water for the town from underground
springs and are still used today. There is a Market Cross in the square
which was erected a reminder to the traders of medieval times to deal
honestly and fairly and was completed in 1447. Charles the 1 st stayed
at the Kings Arms at the time of the Battle of Naseby in 1645. Buildings
which date back as far as the 10 th century are now home to Antiques,
Old Bookshops, Art Galleries, Interior Design and Independent Fashion,
to name but a few of the many interesting shops you can browse in Stow.
At the end of Digbeth Street stands The Royalist, said to be the oldest
Inn in England. An Inn has stood on this site since 947AD. Iron Age and
Bronze Age burial mounds are common throughout the area. The Rollright
Stones near Chipping Norton, a 7 minute drive from Stow, are one of the
best known stone circles in the British Isles. Dating from the Neolithic
period (2500-2000 BC).
